Start with Why

One of my favorite TED Talks is Simon Sinek’s "Start with Why." That question drives everything we do at Next Generation Board. So, why do we exist? I joined my first board when I was just 22, after founding a nonprofit to increase access to fresh food in my community. The president of the local chamber of commerce was surprised—he wanted to know how someone so young could be so passionate about community work. My response is the same one I’ve shared with countless board members and company leaders across the country: "Young people have time, energy, and passion—organizations just need to create the space for them to use it."

Next Generation Board was born from my belief in the power of nonprofits and credit unions as pillars of their communities. These organizations are doing important work, but many are led by boards that are aging and as a result may struggle to stay connected with younger generations. For these organizations to continue thriving, they must tap into the passion and fresh perspectives of younger leaders in their communities. It’s not just a matter of staying relevant—it’s about ensuring the future impact of vital work that touches countless lives.

Your team might recognize the need for younger board members but be unsure where to start. Or, maybe you've already brought on a few younger people, but the culture of your boardroom hasn’t quite adapted to make room for their input. That’s where we come in.

At Next Generation Board, we believe in the power of inexperience, bold ideas, and fresh perspectives. We also know that when a group is united behind a shared purpose, incredible things can happen. We help you recruit and train the right young leaders and create an environment where they can work collaboratively with seasoned board members. The result? A stronger, more dynamic board that’s ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow and continue serving your community.
